Port Dickson was at one time called Pulau Arang-arang where the local economy was predominatly tin mining and producing charcoal. It was also known as Tanjong Kamuning. Now it is named Port Dickson after Sir Frederick Dickson, who was the Colonial Secretary and acting Governor of the colony in 1889. Port Dickson was an important harbour which became a busy centre of trade between Java, Sumatra and Peninsula Malaysia. Over the years it has developed into a very popular seaside resort town offering some 18 kilometres of fine sandy beaches fringed by casuarinas, coconut palms and banyan trees.
